The Challenge

Anki decks come in thousands of variations. Some have 3 fields, others have 15. Some use complex HTML templates with conditional logic, others are plain text. When you import a deck into most apps, you get one of two outcomes:

Walls of Text

Everything mashed together. The word, pronunciation, definition, examples—all in one undifferentiated blob. You squint to find what matters.

Manual Configuration

"Map field 3 to definition, field 7 to example..." For every deck. Every time. Most users give up before finishing.

Our Solution

Anki Green uses smart heuristics to automatically detect what each piece of content means—then structures it using our Flashdown format. No configuration. Just import and review.

Zero Configuration Import

Import any .apkg file. We analyze the template structure, detect content types, and output clean, semantic Flashdown. The word looks like a word. Examples look like examples. Automatically.

How It Works

When you import an Anki deck, our converter analyzes each piece of rendered content and classifies it using pattern recognition:

What We Detect

Phonetics & Readings

IPA symbols, Japanese kana, pinyin, and other pronunciation guides are detected and styled as secondary info.

Definitions

Part of speech markers (n., v., adj.) help us identify and highlight definitions as the core answer content.

Example Sentences

Long sentences with proper punctuation are recognized as examples and styled distinctively.

Mnemonics & Notes

Memory tricks, etymology, collocations, and derivatives are detected via common prefixes (记：, 搭：, note:, etc.).

Media References

Audio files and images are extracted and linked properly, separate from text content.

Metadata Filtering

Deck names, unit numbers, and other metadata clutter is automatically removed from card content.

Language-Aware

Our heuristics are designed for the most common flashcard use cases—language learning and vocabulary building. We handle:

  • English vocabulary — IPA pronunciation, part of speech, example sentences
  • Chinese study aids — 记/搭/派/同/反 prefixes for mnemonics, collocations, and word families
  • Japanese — Hiragana/katakana readings, kanji with furigana
  • General decks — Sensible defaults even without language-specific markers

Fallback Behavior

If our heuristics can't confidently classify content, we fall back to a simple structure: first line as main content, rest as supporting details. Your cards will always render cleanly.
